Turmeric is a plant used as a spice in the kitchen, whose yellow color does not go unnoticed and gives its tone to mustard. But turmeric has not only its function in the kitchen, but also has been used as a natural medicine for thousands of years because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

Curcumin: The Powerful Ingredient of Turmeric

According to several scientific studies:

Curcumin could improve liver damage , according to an experimental study from the Medical University of Graz, Austria.
Curcumin inhibits the growth of skin cancer , melanoma and  breast cancer , according to studies at the University of Texas.
Curcumin used in curry that is consumed daily in India could explain the low rate of Alzheimer's disease in that country, according to epidemiologists.
Turmeric caused a 58% decrease in pain and stiffness in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, according to a study in Italy. They even showed a 300% improvement in their emotional well-being.
In summary and according to an article published in Advanced Experimental Medical Biology, in 2007: "Curcumin has been shown to have  antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-cancer activity . It therefore has a potential against various diseases like diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease and other chronic diseases. "

Possible Side Effects

Turmeric is possibly safe when used appropriately in adults.
Turmeric does not usually cause side effects, although some people may experience upset stomach, nausea, dizziness or diarrhea.

Precautions

Pregnancy and breast-feeding:  It is not recommended to eat turmeric during pregnancy and lactation because it could put pregnancy at risk.
Gallbladder problems:  Turmeric may make gallbladder problems worse.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):  Turmeric can cause upset stomach in some people.
Surgery:  Turmeric may slow blood clotting and cause additional bleeding.

Recommended dose

Talk to your doctor before starting to take turmeric as a natural remedy.

Orally:

For  stomach upset (dyspepsia) it  is recommended to take 500 mg of turmeric, 4 times a day.
For  osteoarthritis it  is recommended to take 500 mg of turmeric extract (Meriva, Indena), 2 times a day.
For  rheumatoid arthritis it  is advised to take 500 mg of turmeric, 2 times a day.
